It pains me that I even need to write this post, but I’ve been seeing so much inappropriate language in the forums, in our Facebook community group and just about everywhere else I turn as well.

I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but there are some four letter words that I just cannot stomach.

The worst offenders? ‘Only’ and ‘just’.

“I’m only really slow but…”

“I just ran 3 kilometres though…”

“I can only… I just am not…”

Stop. It.

Every time you say ‘just’ or ‘only’, you are minimising your achievements.

What you tell the world when you use those words is that you see yourself as less than someone else. You are making excuses for what you perceive as a failing. On top of that, you are unintentionally offending anyone else who may be ‘only’ at the same stage as you.

There is no ‘only’ or ‘just’ when it comes to moving. Yes there are people who are faster, who can go further. Do you know what? There will ALWAYS be people like that. You are never going to be the fastest or the most elite and it DOESN’T EVEN MATTER.

There is one person you can compare yourself to.

That person is you. Yesterday.

She is the one you need to be better than, nobody else walks in your shoes or fights your daily battles.

Every achievement is something you have worked for, and you have earned the right to feel proud of it.

No only. No just.

The world believes what you say about yourself. Tell it something amazing. And believe it yourself, because it is true.

  1. This is EXACTLY what I needed to read before I start the program. And I'm so glad you said 'That person is you. Yesterday.' because I keep comparing myself to what I was like 2 or 3 years ago when I was running 20km training runs and 10km races - and I was fit. I am in such a different place now and I have to remember that whatever I do is better than sitting at home doing nothing ! Have the best day ! Me xox

Lots of love Linda. Yesterday. And every day is one more step away from there and into the life you know you love and deserve. xx

  2. You're so on the money here! I panicked at first because I thought, I use some pretty salty language, but it wasn't about those words. Life Coach lady said to me whenever you put "just" or "only" in front or beside your achievements, you're discounting what you've done. And at no time did you get a discount on your work to achieve these things. Only and Just are on the forbidden words list. Unless, and this is a big unless, I'm trying to show off to non-running peeps and I say "It's just a 10k" just to sound like it's no big thing sister. Another good piece Kate.

Oh Kate, I am the queen of salt and married to a trucker. I know and likely use more salty words than most ;) But these are the ones that truly offend me :)

  3. So funny you posted this. I was out walking with the pram today and thought, it will only be a short walk, just a short one, not as long as I usually do. Then I stopped myself and thought, It is A WALK. It is MORE THAN YOU WOULD DO SITTING AT HOME! Completely changed my thinking and pushed on :)

So true Gen! I am really guilty of doing it too, and I think we all need to give ourselves a lot more credit!

  4. YES! As I am sure you have seen, I am constantly gently correcting people when they do this! "No 'only' about it!" Bravo!

  5. Well said Kate! I shat myself (pardon the pun) for a minute there as my language can be salty at times. This is so true & I'm definitely of being guilty of this x

  6. yeah - well, I also thought I was going to get a spanking for my "other" language but AGREE!! its JUST that does my nut in. Stop it, just stop it, there is nothing JUST about improving your healthy and wellbeing. x

  7. Oh Kate, I LOVE this post... and what perfect timing. Thanks heaps! :) xx
