It has been quite a year.

I’ve just figured out that I have run 1115 kilometres this year, and I know that a few will have gone unrecorded. I’ve also walked a lot and cycled a bit too.

For the first time since May, I am not in training for anything right now. Until around February next year I have no goals other than those I set myself.

Of course, they are the most important ones of all. If I’d never set myself the goal to start moving in the first place none of this would be happening anyway.

I have one half and one full marathon planned for next year already, and I’m sure there will be other events come up over the year as well. By the time the kids are settled into school I will be back into following a training plan too.

So I am switching it up for Summer.

I’ll have kids home from school which will impact my ability to get out and do things anyway, and this Summer I want to get out and do things WITH THEM regardless.

I’m thinking less structure to my weeks. Less planned distance running goals and more getting out for a quick half hour or a cruisy hour as I’m able.

I’m thinking loading up the bikes and hitting the rail trail with my kids, and speed playing no part in any of it. Just riding and having fun.

I’m thinking that when my little kids are at care, I can take my big kids to the pool and have some fun. Not go to swim laps and work hard, but just to have fun and be active with them.

I’m a different person to the one I was 18 months ago. I used to see those active families and think they were nuts as I sat on my bum and smoked my cigarettes and drank loads of coffee and ate too much everything.

I know their secret now. I am switching it up for Summer and getting amongst it.

Will you join me?

Definitely! I'm looking forward to getting out and about with the kids and thinking of ways to move with them. One thing they seem to be into at the moment is handball so I can see some matches coming up in the near future ;)

I will definitely be moving with the kids these coming holidays. I want to show them how much fun it is and how much I've changed.

My aim is to get the kids more active during summer. I'm looking forward to no school mornings so I can get out there!

yep! Sounds great Kate, have a little structured running until Dec 31st (just to get my year total ; )) - but before then and after then..... loads of beach swimming , walking, and then back for a ski. will be great to move when we feel like it 1115 - noice one!! x

  6. Sounds like a great plan. I am planning on doing more dragon boat paddling , canoeing and maybe a little bike riding with the kids and 2 runs a week. I'm hooked on being active.

  7. My middle kids are teaching me how to throw a shot put and discus as they do little aths! I bought them one each in the correct weights and they love going down to the local track and hurling it just for fun. Whilst we do that the other two play in the sand pit (oops long jump pit) and I'm going to try and start using the track for some speed work whilst we are down there and see who joins in! I have one more to teach to ride a bike so cycling is a weekend affair when someone stay home with littlest. Also my hubby got a Kayak for his 40th earlier in the year and everyone plans on trying that out over summer. What with swimming, trampolining (all day everyday) and the tready I think we are going to have lots of fun moving this summer.
