Operation Move December Challenge

Welcome to December, the most delicious month of the year!

I love the Christmas season. I love decorating the house and watching cheesy movies with the kids. I love the magic that surrounds it all.

I also love fruit mince pies, turkey, candy canes, chocolate and all the other yums that come with the season.

I have a half marathon next weekend, so that’s okay for this week but it’s really easy to slide into inactivity once the holidays start.

So I have a plan, and maybe you’d like to make a similar one for yourself?

I’m hoping to continue getting in three runs a week, but after my half I’m looking forward to my long runs being not quite so long for a while.

But that aside, my plan is to move for at least 30 minutes five days a week.

That’s it. Easy right?

Even with our crazy busy December schedule, I can find and utilise 30 minutes every weekday to move my body.

Some days I will run. Some days I might walk or ride the bike. I’ll be doing the squat challenge and maybe some days I’ll do a little home circuit with things like jumping jacks, lunges, push ups, planks, running on the spot, tricep dips and other such things to change it all up a bit.

By being flexible I’ll be able to choose things I can do with the kids when they are home for school holidays, and what I might get to do on my own some days as well.

Regardless of what I do, I WILL move for 600 minutes based on 30 minutes five days a week.

If you are new here, hopefully this sounds like a really achievable starting point that you might like to try yourself?

30 mins 5 days a week sounds tough but I'll try. I'll definitely aim for 600 mins for the month though!

I think the key is to remember it doesn't have to be all at once Jo? I know sometimes my days mean I'm lucky to have ten minutes in a row, but in ten minutes I could do some squats, a plank and dance around with the kids! Do that three times and you're sorted!

So true and I'm going to try to do it like that. I need to make exercise routine and habit! Maybe I should do some squats every time I check Facebook. That would either fix my social media addiction or give me buns of steel really fast ;)

I really looooove Christmas too Kate ! I'll totally give this a go x

  3. It may be a while before I get the all clear to exercise for real but I am sure I can make time to do some core strength and walks to try to avoid the Christmas spread.

  4. I think this is very much doable for me. I am aiming for at least 30 minutes 6 days a week atm. C25k and walking.

I'm in - and hopefully when the kids are home I can get them moving as well!

Great plan Rach! I spent last holidays trying to work around them, I think it is going to be a lot more fun planning on moving with them this time :)

  8. I'm in! This is such good timing for me. Our life has gotten so hectic, and our moving has slowed down due to time restraints, but just this morning I told the husband we had to find time in every day for some sort of moving, so while the kids rode their bikes around the netball courts this morning, I ran/walked intervals around the courts, 4.1km later and we headed home, all feeling so much better than the cranky, irritated lot we were when we left the house :)

  10. 600 min in the month, I think I can do that! Running is going on the back burner for me as of next Sunday to allow my foot to fully heal, but our pool beckons, as does the ski boat. And I'm hoping to get the bike and trailer out of the shed and going as well. Big plans!

  11. Okay, given how little I moved in November, committing to 600 minutes makes me nervous. Which is why I'm going to do it! 600 minutes for me ...

  12. I just wanna to 100km this month, would love to.... that would take me to 1,000km (recorded) for the year and that just blows my mind : )

I have the half next weekend too so not going to do anything new this week. However the week after I am in as I want to focus on getting stronger and faster for a 10k I have in early Jan. 2014 is going to be about getting faster for me.

    • Nice one Lee - there is a certain magic about going faster that is just as awesome as going longer but look at Usain Bolt - he ain't a household name for nothin' :P

    • Lee that will be so cool, will be watching how you do it. Let's book in for some farleks in the park next year x

      • I am a bit jetlaged but hoping to get to the park today and perhaps a better run tomorrow..

          • Parked it yesterday - Albert Park and parked it again today - humid today - what's with melb runners no one smiles or says hello?? Lucky I do so on the loop back all those that I said g'day to all smiled and nodded when they saw me :)

  15. Two days in Melbourne and 15km so far with lots of walking - off to the spa now.. Who says you can't exercise on holiday? :)
